Opinion: We cannot safely reopen the economy if Oregonians still lack paid leave

The COVID-19 pandemic has made obvious what many of us have always known: A workforce without the right to take paid leave to deal with illness and take care of your family means more sick people and a weaker economy.

The U.S. has long been one of the only rich nations without a national standard for paid sick time or paid family and medical leave. Family Forward advocated alongside many others for over a decade to win a landmark statewide paid family and medical leave insurance program (which won’t be available until January 2023), and a statewide paid sick time law (which was implemented in 2016).
