We, the undersigned Oregon moms and caregivers, are writing to demand your support for the policies and investments currently included in the Build Back Better Act.
We would like to remind you that any economic recovery policies proposed that do not include the elements outlined below will continue to leave behind mothers and caregivers.
The policies and investments outlined below are the BARE MINIMUM of what we need to survive and recover from the pandemic. Nearly 3 million women have already had to drop out of the workforce and in Oregon there is an 18% gender gap in workforce participation between mothers and fathers. These disparities are disproportionately felt by women, mothers, and caregivers that identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Pacific Islander, and/or people of color.
The United States economy cannot function without us. We demand your support for the policies currently in the Build Back Better Act, including:
Paid Leave
- At least four weeks of job-protected paid leave
- Covers everyone and is accessible for all
- Lets you return to the same or equivalent job
- Recognizes all family types
Child Care & Early Learning
- $400 billion investment that provides affordable, high quality child care for all families earning below 250% of the state median income, with no eligible family paying more than 7% of their income on child care and the lowest wage earners paying nothing.
- Universal, high-quality, free, inclusive and mixed delivery pre-K for 3 and 4 year olds that will prioritize roll out in high-need communities.
- Funds to increase child care supply and quality, raise wages for providers, and grow our child care workforce.
Home and Community Based Services
- $150 billion investment to deliver affordable, high-quality care for older Americans and people with disabilities in their homes, and support workers who provide this care.
- Expanded access to care and increased wages and quality of jobs for the direct care workforce.
Child Tax Credit:
- Extension of the current expanded child tax credit that was enacted under the American Rescue Plan and a continuation of advance payments through 2022.
- Full refundability of the Child Tax Credit is made permanent and eligibility for children with ITINs is restored.
Remember one thing as you’re asked to negotiate the necessities our families have asked for: THINGS DO NOT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY. If the super rich and wealthy corporations paid their fair share in taxes, the rest of our families wouldn’t need to struggle for the basics.
Please don’t choose a handful of super rich billionaires and wealthy corporations over the millions of women, mothers, and caregivers who will not make it through this pandemic without paid leave, child care, an extended and permanent child tax credit, and major investments in home care work.
